Profile of West Bengal Education

The richness in the educational system of West Bengal is understood by the stalwarts who have made West Bengal proud like  Ram Mohan Roy, David Hare, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Shashi Bhusan Chatterjee. Though the West Bengal Primary Education Act, 1973 was passed in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly as early as on the 20th September, 1974, the West Bengal Board of Primary Education could be established as provided in the Act only in 1990. The formation of the Board as well as the District Primary School Councils as per the revised act was further delayed. West Bengal has many reputed institutes of higher education like – Jadavpur University (first to introduce chemical engineering and numerous other interdisciplinary studies in India ), Presidency College, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (the first IIM), Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (the first IIT), Bengal Engineering and Science University (2nd oldest engineering institution in India), Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata, National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, Indian Statistical Institute and Visva-Bharati University.

School Education in West Bengal

With the establishment of this Board, unique in the whole country in respect of supervision, development, management and control of Primary Education in the State, four segments of education in the State came under four such autonomous Boards, viz.
Most of the schools are affiliated to the ICSE Board and Board of Secondary Education. The newly established schools are now also affiliated to the CBSE Board.

Higher Education in West Bengal

West Bengal is particularly known for its tremendous capability of providing higher education with the help of Engineering colleges, B.Ed colleges, commerce colleges and all the important education streams. The colleges of arts and science have always shown their competence in producing scholars and leaders. 

Calcutta Medical College which is the oldest medical school in Asia was set up in 1835. In 1857, the University of Calcutta, which was established on the lines of the University of London was established as the first full-fledged multi-disciplinary university in south Asia. Today it is amongst the largest multidisciplinary universities of India and offers some of the widest number of academic disciplines for study. 

In 1856 technical and engineering education came with the establishment of a civil engineering college / department with the establishment of Bengal Engineering College in 1921. The Jesuit administered St Xavier's College was established in 1860. In 1906, the partition of Bengal led to widespread nationalistic and anti British feelings which led to the establishment of the National Council of Education, Bengal, now known as the Jadavpur University. The first, Indian Institute of Technology was set up at Kharagpurabout 120 km from Calcutta. In 1960 the Regional Engineering college (presently National Institute of Technology) at Durgapur was set up. It is amongst the top NITs in India and also among the oldest. Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, the first among the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management, was set up in 1961 at Joka.
