Earlier known as Regional Engineering College Durgapur, the National Institute of Technology Durgapur (also known as NIT Durgapur or NITDGP) was established in 1960 by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Bidhan Chandra Roy. It was among the 8 Regional Engineering colleges to be established during that time and today it is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India and has been recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007.
Among all the facilities available in the College, the Library as one of the important central facilities of the Institute. It supports the study, teaching, research and development programmes of the Institute. The library has a collection of 1.2 lac volumes which includes text books, reference books and journals etc. The Library subscribes to about 180 current Journals. Library operations have been automated with the help of an integrated library software package. It has a good collection of Electronic resources in its Digital Library.

Admission to the undergraduate courses is made through JEE Mains, the results of which are published in end April or early May.
