The livestock and fishers sector contributed about 5% to the total GDP during 2008-2010. Livestock production is growing at a faster rate than agriculture and by 2020, livestock will account for more than half of total global agricultural output. West Bengal has the potential to make it big in this sector considering that is the highest fish producing (1.5 million tones) state in the country including the production of 1.26 metric tones inland fishes. Keeping this potential in mind the West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences was established on 2nd January 1995. The main objective of the University is to impart quality education and disseminate proven technologies through its various programs and Extension Wing. The University caters to the research and training of students in animal sciences, dairy sciences and fishery sciences. The University
is engaged in improving the research infrastructure to develop cutting edge technologies for improved management of animal and fishery resources
Academic Programs of the West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences
The University offers 2 years Diploma course in Veterinary Pharmacy (D.V.P.), 5 years B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree programme in the faculty of Veterinary & Animal Science, 4 years B.Tech. (Dairy Technology) programme in the faculty of Dairy Technology & 4 years B.F.Sc. degree programme in the Fishery Science faculty.
Two years post graduate programmes like M.V.Sc., M.Tech. and M.F.Sc. are also offered from the faculties. Besides, the 3 faculties also offer 3 years Ph.D programme in different disciplines. All these degree programmes are conducted by six months semester system examinations and are conducted both by internal and external examination systems.
The Post graduate and Ph.D. programmes in the three faculties are conducted as per ICAR course curricula and the regulations are followed as per the regulations of the University.

Research Wing of West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences
Besides its three faculties, the Directorate of Research, Extension & Farms is an important wing of the University. It is responsible for monitoring the research projects taken over by the different units of the University as well as takes active role in providing extension services to the livestock owners and stakeholders through training, literature and consultancy services.
It is also involved in the planning and execution of reserach activities in a systaematic manner and also holds symposiums, seminars and workshops.
Library of West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences
The Central Library of WBUAFS has established in 1995 at Kolkata Campus after being bifurcated from the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya. Currently, there are 24265 books, about 100 e books and many more e journals.
