West Bengal has played a major role in the development of modern education system in India. The University of Calcutta was the first modern university in India, established in 1857. Nobel laureates who either studied or worked here include Rabindranath Tagore, Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, Ronald Ross, Amartya Sen and Abhijit Banerjee . Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is one of the prominent freedom fighters of India to have studied in Calcutta University. Among the presidents of India associated with this university are Rajendra Prasad, Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan and Pranab Mukherjee.
The prestigious first IIT was set up at Kharagpur in the state. It is the oldest among all IITs in the country situated at a distance of 120 km from the city of Kolkata. Another premier management institute like IIM was established in Kolkata in 1961. The institute was formed with the help of MIT Sloan School of Management and Ford Foundation.
There are many prominent institutes in West Bengal that offers undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral degrees in a number of disciplines including basic sciences, mathematics, literature, economic sciences, material sciences, computer sciences, technology, engineering, and management.
