Jadavpur University

The main aim of the NCE (National Council of Education) which was founded by luminaries like Raja Subodh Chandra Mallik , Brajendra Kishore Roychowdhury of Gouripur as well as Sir Rash Behari Ghosh was to impart education - literary, scientific and technical on national lines exclusively under national control. Sir Rash Behari Ghosh was the first President of NCE and poet Rabindranath Tagore and Sri Aurobindo Ghosh also took active interest.

The NCE resulted in the establishment of Bengal National College which subsequently became the College of Engineering and Technology. In 1910 the College of Engineering and Technology, Bengal which was working virtually like a university was merged to NCE. After Independence, the Government of West Bengal, with the approval of the Government of India established Jadavpur University on the 24th of December 1955.

Sri Aurobindo was the first Principal of the Bengal National College and among the teachers was luminaries like Rabindranath Tagore, Sir Gurudas Banerjee, Ananda Coomaraswamy, Surendra Nath Banerjee, Ramendra Sundar Trivedi, Radha Kumud Mukherjee, Benoy Kumar Sarkar, Sakharam Ganesh Deoskar and others.

Library of Jadavpur University

Jadavpur University Library started with the establishment of the University in 1955 in order to cater to the the academic needs of the students, research scholars, faculty, and non-teaching staff. Since then, the University Library has gone from strength to strength and today it is one of most well equipped librares of the country.

The Library system of Jadavpur University comprises the Central Library, Salt Lake Campus Library, 36 Departmental Libraries under the Faculty of Arts, Science, Engineering and Technology, and about 23 Libraries attached with the Schools and Centres for studies under the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies Law and Management. The Central Library of Jadavpur University is one of the central facilities used by all types of members of this University and also by the scholars of other institutions.
