Institution of Engineers
Rapid industrialisation was taking place after the First World War and the Indian Government too felt the need to keep pace with it. Accordingly the Government of India formed an Indian Industrial Commission under the Chairmanship Sir Thomas Holland, the then Commerce member of the then Govt. of India. The commission recommended the establishment of an Institution as a professional body of engineers to ensure advancement of technology and uphold the quality of products in various stages of production.
This resulted in the formation of “Indian Society of Engineers” on 3rd January, 1919 in Calcutta. Subsequently, rules and constitution were drafted and circulated nationwide for the all interested people and after some modifications and additions the name of the Society was changed to The Institution of Engineers (India). The Institution of Engineers (India), with its headquarters in Kolkata, India, is administered by a National Council with the President of IEI as its Head.
Having started as a pioneer body from 1928, the Institute has been relentlessly working in various engineering education programmes.
