University of Gour Banga

The University of Gour Banga (UGB) was established in 2008 by The West Bengal Act XXVI Of 2007 at Malda, West Bengal. Through the establishment of this University, the government tried to address the issue of inequality in higher education and improve accessibility of higher education among educationally backward people of the region.

The UGB, has a territorial jurisdiction all over Malda, Uttar Dianjpur and Dakshin Dinjpur district. Its main objective was to achieve and maintain highest levels of academic excellence of the socio-economically backward segments of Muslims, SC and ST which constitute more than 75 percent of the population in its catchment area.

It is going to be well placed to meet the challenges of a world that is changing locally, nationally and globally.

Academic Programees and Courses in University of Gour Banga

PG courses that are self-financed are being offered presently by two affiliate general degree colleges namely, Malda College and Balurghat College. Malda College is offering PG courses on English, Bengali and History while Balurghat College is offering History, Bengali and Sanskrit. PG Departments like Botany, Chemistry and Zoology have recently received three research projects funded by DST (Department of Science and Technology), Government of India.

Currently there are 34 affiliated colleges out of which 20 general degree colleges provide Bachelor of Arts, Commerce and business administration. 12 colleges provide B.Ed. course while one college offers B.P.Ed. course and one college conducts 5 yrs Integrated LL.B. ( B.A. & LL.B. ) course.

The University Campus offers M.A. in English/Bengali/Arabic/Sanskrit/History/Education and M.Sc. in Mathematics.

Faculty of Science

This faculty consists of the departments of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Food & Nutrition, Botany, Zoology, and Physiology.

Faculty of Humanities, Social Science & Commerce

This faculty consists of the departments of Bengali, English, Arabic, Sanskrit, History, Geography, Political Science, Philosophy, Economics, Sociology, and Commerce.

Faculty of Law, Education, Journalism, Library Science, and Physical Education

This faculty consists of the departments of Education, Library and Information Science, Law, and Mass Communication.
