Sanskrit College and University

Based on the recommendations of HT James Prinsep and Thomas Babington Macaulay, the foundation stone of Sanskrit College laid by John Paskal Larkins Esquire in 1824. Mr H.H.Wilson played a great role in establishing the college and was responsible for imparting knowledge of ancient literature, philosophy, Hindu Law, grammar, Indian Culture and to promote the learning of Sanskrit among British officials as well as the Indians. However, it was only when Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar took over the reins of the College that it saw tremendous growth. It also started accepting non-Brahmin students in the college. The college stands tall even after covering more than 180 years of its existence.

Sanskrit College was granted the university status and renamedThe Sanskrit College and University by the Government of West Bengal vide the Legislative Act XXXIII of 2015. It began functioning as a University  from 15th June 2016 with the joining of its First Vice Chancellor Professor Dilipkumar Mohanta.
